This is the time of year to repair your lawn. Temperatures are ideal, there is adequate rain and the majority of weeds are on their way out. A typical case is seen above. Jon's Lawns transformed a lawn that was overridden with crabgrass into lush, tall-fescue lawn and the owners are very happy. Some keys to the rejuvenation were using the highest quality seed, applying the best starter fertilizer, adding compost and employing a proper watering schedule.
Annapolis weather is making a slow but definite shift towards Spring. Snow is melting, temperatures are rising (slowly) and if you listen carefully you will hear birds in the morning. That is all good news! Spring brings blooms, time outdoors, and crab season but also a lot of work; Mulch installations, fertilizer, pre-emergent weed control and mowing are all on the horizon.
In the coming weeks Jon's Lawns of Annapolis will be advertising around Annapolis neighborhoods and filling the 2014 service calendar. Our advertisement will have a link to the exclusive Jon's Lawns VIP page. Keep an eye out for us and if you would like to get a jump start on the season, take a look at our Lawn Care Specials page and become a Jon's Lawns VIP today. Day #1 of the 2014 Maryland Turfgrass Conference at the University of Maryland was a focus on fertilizers. Some great information was presented on advances with polymer-coated sulfur-coated urea (PCSCU) slow release fertilizers which provide a slow, constant supply of nitrogen to grasses after the initial green-up response. Leaders in the field presented new research results regarding timing of applications and it's relevance in the "transition zone" which Maryland is a part of. Later on in the technology portion, things got futuristic with the topic of aerial drone use in the workplace. You never know when the first Jon's Lawns of Annapolis drone may fly into your neighborhood!
Day #2 showed a high of 20 degrees and our Maryland grasses were NOT growing. That made it great timing for a conference. Much was presented on new products in the herbicide field with research results showing the most effective product combinations and strategies for pre-emergent weed suppression and year long control. That being said, the very best weed controller out there is a healthy, dense lawn to crowd out the weeds. Professional Fertilizer Applicator license arrived at Jon's Lawns of Annapolis today.
Maryland instituted new laws starting October 1, 2013 to ensure that anybody applying fertilizer in the state of Maryland does so in a way that is both healthy for the lawn and healthy for surrounding waterways including the Chesapeake Bay. http://mda.maryland.gov/Pages/fertilizer.aspx More on this to come but rest assured that Jon's Lawns of Annapolis is legal and ready to "green-up" this spring! There is no question that the Chesapeake Bay is a beautiful resource requiring protection. This is a picture that I took at my favorite, secret crabbing location. It is a handsome, 7 inch male crab.
The new Maryland fertilizer laws are in place to allow you to have a healthy lawn, while making sure the nutrients stay where they belong and out of our precious waterways. |
